چکیده

Line widths derived from observational data obtained by SUMER onboard SOHO in August 1996 at disk center and at the limb are used to confront those derived via assuming Alfvén and/or magneto-acoustic wave heating. The observational data clearly shows a center-to-limb variation in the upper chromospheric and transition region lines, with only a marginal difference in the coronal lines in the sense of additional broadening further from disk center. Numerical estimations based on linear MHD, favour the existence of Alfvén wave heating over magneto-acoustic heating, although further calculations are required. For example, non-linear effects could change the wave characteristics which in turn can have a major effect on the overall line broadening.

Comparison of far-ultraviolet emission lines formed in coronal holes and the quiet Sun

We present an analysis of 26 far-ultraviolet emission lines belonging to 19 atoms and ions observed on both sides of the boundary of polar coronal holes as well as other quiet Sun areas along the limb. The observations were made with the SUMER instrument (Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). We compare line intensities, shif...

Solar transition region line broadening: Limb to limb measurements

Full disk images from SUMER/SoHO taken in He i, C iv and Ne viii are used to investigate whether there exists a center-to-limb variation in the line width. Both C iv and He i show such a variation but the higher temperature Ne viii line is relatively constant. For C iv, this corresponds to ∼ 3 km s−1 difference while He i is significantly larger particularly at the limb. This work may suggest t...

Reappraising Transition Region Line Widths in light of Recent Alfvén Wave Discoveries

We provide a new interpretation of ultraviolet transition region emission line widths observed by the SUMER instrument on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). This investigation is prompted by observations of the chromosphere at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution from the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on Hinode revealing that all chromospheric structures above the limb disp...

Properties of the Lower Transition Region: the Widths of Optically Allowed and Intersystem Spectral Lines

The widths of spectral lines in the ultraviolet (UV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral regions that are formed in the solar transition region and corona are usually greater than the optically thin widths due to thermal Doppler broadening calculated under the assumption of ionization equilibrium. Although opacity can explain the widths of some lines, there are a host of optically thin lines...

Similarities and differences between coronal holes and the quiet Sun : are loop statistics the key ?

Coronal holes (CH) emit significantly less at coronal temperatures than quiet Sun regions (QS), but can hardly be distinguished in most chromospheric and lower transition region lines. A key quantity for the understanding of this phenomenon is the magnetic field. We use data from SOHO/MDI to reconstruct the magnetic field in coronal holes and the quiet Sun with the help of a potential magnetic ...
